Your phone’s default settings may not feel comfortable for everyone. Text can look too small, sounds may be too quiet or loud, and the screen may feel too bright or dim. Fortunately, most phones include simple controls that let you personalize the experience.
This guide explains how to adjust text size, sound, brightness, colors, and other display options on both iPhone and Android devices. Menu names can vary slightly depending on your phone model and software version, but the general steps are similar.
Adjust Text Size and Font Appearance
Changing text size is one of the quickest ways to make a phone easier to read. You can usually adjust text throughout the system, including menus, messages, and supported apps.
On an iPhone
- Open the **Settings** app.
- Tap **Display & Brightness**.
- Select **Text Size**.
- Drag the slider left or right to make text smaller or larger.
For even larger text:
- Open **Settings**.
- Tap **Accessibility**.
- Choose **Display & Text Size**.
- Tap **Larger Text**.
- Turn on **Larger Accessibility Sizes** if needed.
- Move the slider to your preferred size.
You may also turn on Bold Text in the Display & Text Size menu. Bold lettering can improve readability, although it may slightly change the appearance of menus and buttons.
On an Android phone
Android settings vary between brands, but the options are commonly found here:
- Open **Settings**.
- Tap **Display**.
- Choose **Font size** or **Font size and style**.
- Move the slider until the text is comfortable to read.
Some Android phones also include a Screen zoom or Display size option. This changes the size of icons, buttons, and other screen elements, not just the letters.
If you want a larger view of a specific part of the screen, look for Magnification under Accessibility. This feature lets you zoom in temporarily using a shortcut, button, or gesture.
Change Screen Brightness
Screen brightness affects comfort, visibility, and battery use. A screen that is too bright can be uncomfortable in a dark room, while a dim screen may be difficult to see outdoors.
Adjust brightness manually
On most phones, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the quick settings panel. Find the brightness slider and move it left or right.
You can also change brightness through the main settings:
– iPhone: Settings > Display & Brightness
– Android: Settings > Display > Brightness level
Turn on automatic brightness
Automatic brightness uses the phone’s light sensor to adjust the screen based on your surroundings.
– On an iPhone, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, then turn on Auto-Brightness.
– On Android, look for Adaptive brightness under Display or Brightness settings.
Automatic brightness can be useful when moving between indoor and outdoor environments. If the screen does not look right, you can turn the feature off and set the brightness manually.
Use Dark Mode and Light Mode
Dark Mode uses a darker background with lighter text. It may feel more comfortable in low-light settings, while Light Mode often provides a brighter, familiar appearance.
On an iPhone
- Open **Settings**.
- Tap **Display & Brightness**.
- Select **Light** or **Dark**.
You can also turn on Automatic to switch between modes at a chosen time, such as from sunset to sunrise.
On an Android phone
- Open **Settings**.
- Tap **Display**.
- Select **Dark theme**, **Dark mode**, or a similar option.
- Turn the feature on or schedule it.
Some apps have their own appearance settings. If an app does not change when you turn on Dark Mode, check the app’s settings for a separate theme option.
Adjust Screen Colors and Contrast
Phones include color and contrast tools that can make content easier to see.
Common options include:
– Night Shift or Night Light: Makes screen colors warmer in the evening.
– Color filters: Changes how colors appear on the screen.
– Color correction: Helps distinguish colors that may look similar.
– Increased contrast: Makes text and buttons stand out more.
– Reduce transparency: Makes some backgrounds less see-through.
On an iPhone, many of these controls are located under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Night Shift is under Settings > Display & Brightness.
On Android, check Settings > Display and Settings > Accessibility. The exact names may differ by manufacturer.
Use one change at a time so you can tell which setting improves the screen for you. If colors begin to look unusual, return to the same menu and turn the feature off.
Adjust Volume and Sound Levels
Your phone usually has separate controls for media, calls, notifications, alarms, and ringtones. Changing one volume level may not change the others.
Use the volume buttons
Press the volume buttons on the side of the phone. A volume panel should appear on the screen. Tap the menu or three-dot button on the panel to view more sliders, such as:
– Media volume
– Call volume
– Ring volume
– Notification volume
– Alarm volume
On some phones, the volume buttons control media volume when music or video is playing and ringtone volume at other times.
Change sound settings
For additional controls:
– iPhone: Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics
– Android: Open Settings > Sound and vibration
From these menus, you may be able to select a ringtone, adjust alert sounds, change vibration strength, and control whether the phone rings, vibrates, or stays silent.
If you regularly miss calls, increase the ringtone volume and choose a sound that is easy to recognize. If alerts are distracting, lower notification volume or use a quieter alert tone.
Improve Hearing and Call Clarity
Many phones offer accessibility features for sound and calls.
On an iPhone, check Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual. Options may include:
– Mono Audio, which combines left and right audio channels
– Balance controls for left and right audio
– Headphone audio adjustments
– LED Flash for Alerts
On Android, open Settings > Accessibility and look for hearing-related options. Depending on the device, you may find Mono audio, Audio balance, Live Caption, or tools for connected hearing devices.
If you use wireless headphones or a car audio system, make sure the correct device is connected. You can check the Bluetooth panel in quick settings or under the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
Use Focus, Silent, and Do Not Disturb Modes
Sound settings are not only about volume. Your phone may also include modes that control when alerts appear.
– Silent mode turns off or reduces ringing and alert sounds.
– Vibrate mode provides an alert without using a ringtone.
– Do Not Disturb limits interruptions during selected times.
– Focus modes can allow alerts from specific people or apps.
These options are useful during meetings, while sleeping, or when you need uninterrupted time. Review the schedule and allowed contacts so important alerts are not missed.
If Settings Do Not Seem to Work
If a change does not take effect, try these steps:
- Check whether the phone is connected to headphones, a car, or another Bluetooth device.
- Make sure the correct volume slider was changed.
- Close and reopen the app affected by the setting.
- Restart the phone.
- Install available system updates.
- Check the app’s own text, sound, or display settings.
Some apps do not support larger system text, while others use separate controls. If a setting is difficult to find, use the search box at the top of the Settings app and search for terms such as “text size,” “brightness,” “volume,” or “display.”
Make Small Changes for a Better Experience
You do not need to change every setting at once. Start with the adjustment that solves the biggest problem, such as increasing text size, lowering brightness, or raising ringtone volume. Test the change in different situations, including bright daylight, a dark room, and a quiet or noisy area.
With a few simple adjustments, your phone can become easier to read, hear, and use throughout the day.
